US Shouldn’t Adopt ‘Iraq Model’ In North Korea ( Source- Eurasia Review / Author- N.S Venkararaman)

In recent times, North Korea has been in the international news for all wrong reasons. The recent launching of the missiles by North Korea and the suspicion that North Korea could be developing nuclear capabilities have created huge anxiety amongst the governments, particularly in western Europe and U S A.

As U S government appears to be thinking that it is the policeman of the world and imagining that it has the responsibility and perhaps even assuming that it has the authority to control North Korea from indulging in any nuclear adventure, whether real or imaginary, it has imposed sanctions on North Korea, over and above the various types of restriction already placed on North Korea.

During the recent Nuclear Security summit meet , U S President Obama particularly focused his criticism on North Korea and painted the country as the real threat to world peace.

Nobody in the world really knows much about the character and personality of the leaders of the North Korean government. However, a global perspective is being created carefully by some governments and media that North Korea is under the control of ruthless leaders , who are being painted as suppressing the people’s freedom against their wishes.

In any case, one wonders how USA will “tackle” North Korea now. Obviously, there is no immediate way that the US or the western governments can influence the North Korean government to toe their way, since their relationship with North Korea remains highly strained.

In such circumstances, one cannot be blamed if he would think that “Iraq model” would be adopted by USA and west European countries to bring North Korea under their control.

It is too soon for the world to forget that US and western countries accused Saddam Hussain, the then President of Iraq , of possessing weapons of mass destruction and used such accusation as a justification to attack Iraq and ultimately capture Saddam Hussain and hang him and bring Iraq under their control.

UNO , which should behave as an organisation for all people and all countries, virtually supported US government’s actions in Iraq for all practical purposes and failed to play constructive role to avoid war in Iraq.

Later on, the investigation proved that weapons of mass destruction were not there in Iraq and many people across the world suspected that US and some European countries could have planted a story regarding the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq ,as an excuse to attack Iraq and wipe out Saddam Hussain. This objective was achieved.

One wonders whether US and western countries would now adopt the same “Iraq model “ in North Korea too, with “greater experience and expertise” that they have gained in executing the Iraq model. God forbid

Certainly, there is a strong case for the world opinion to assert itself now , so that US government would not be emboldened to adopt “Iraq model “in North Korea and indulge in any military adventure.

It should be kept in mind that when US and western countries attacked Iraq militarily , thousands of innocent men , women and children were killed in the bombing and other forms of warfare, historical monuments were destroyed and citizens of Iraq were put to great sufferings. Citizens of North Korea should be spared from such ordeal.

Let United Nations , in it’s wisdom, find a civilized method to deal with the so called nuclear bomb threat from North Korea and prevent free run for USA and other countries to impose their will on North Korea, that may cause untold sufferings for innocent citizens of North Korea.
