While discussing military-technical cooperation between the two countries during a telephone conversation on March 23, the two ministers agreed to work out details for the transfer, on a leasing agreement, of a second nuclear-powered submarine (NPS) to the Indian Navy. According to Kommersant, the situation is being complicated by different approaches to this issue. In New Delhi they want to rent the latest multi-purpose project 885 Yasen-class submarine, but the Russian Navy has its own plans for this sub. A compromise being considered is the transfer of a project 971 submarine. Kommersant learned about the phone conversation between the two ministers from an official Defence Ministry press

INS Chakra SSN ( Image credits- Wikimedia Commons / Indian navy) Source- Russia & India Report Author- Rakesh Krishna Simha Russia and India – either through design or happenstance – are set to engage the western navies in an interesting game of undersea hide and seek. Chasing nuclear submarines is how major navies earn their keep. The Russian and US fleets track each other’s subs on a 24/7 basis by listening to the acoustic signatures – a combination of noise emissions – that are unique to each type of submarine. For several decades the Americans held the advantage as they claimed to have quieter submarines. The Russians closed the gap by the mid-1980s and today their submarines have got the inside track on the US Navy. The net result is this undersea contest has become more intense now and the stakes are a lot higher too. Unlike surface ships and aircraft, submarines do not have markings or IFF (Identify Friend/Foe) codes that can out them. The only way

The possibility of leasing a second submarine from Russia will be studied when India’s Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar will visit Moscow next week," the source said. "Parrikar will hold talks on this strategic project with his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoigu. After the ten-year contract is signed another two or three years will be required for upgrading the submarine in keeping with India’s requirements," he said. Over the past 45 years Russia and India have established reliable, time-tested strategic ties in the field of defence. India’s armed forces are equipped with Soviet and Russian military hardware 70%, the source said, adding that Russia had always provided its best

PLAN expansion into the Indian Ocean- What can India do?

PLAN Type- 39 Song Class Submarine ( Source- Wikimedia Commons / Author- SteKrrueBe) This news in Indian media was long coming. A Chinese submarine docked in Karachi port creeping close to the Indian territory and covering the entire length of the Indian coast from east to the west. It was a signal to all those concerned the PLAN has come of age and it is a power to be reckoned with and should not be under estimated. People's Liberation Army Navy is the official naval wing of the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army. For the  greater part of their history, PLAN was a brown water navy, meaning that  it was primed for coastal security and did not possess the capability for power projection outside their realm. But with the massive economic liberalisation, China finally had the resources to build up on their navy. China also attained the capability for mass production that ensured that they could field more ships in lesser time than any other navy in the world. China developed th

Last week India’s Economic Times reported that the Indian conglomerate Reliance Infrastructure—which owns stakes in numerous Indian defense companies—is seeking Russian assistance for programs to locally produce nuclear submarines and other stealth warships. According to the report, top Reliance executives were in Moscow last week to meet with Russian defense officials about finding a partner for a joint venture between a Russian defense company and Pipavav Defence & Offshore Engineering, India’s largest defense shipyard, which Reliance has an 18 percent stake in. Specifically, Reliance is looking for a Russian partner with the “requisite technology expertise for manufacturing warships in India.” As the Economic Times points out, the meetings come on the heels o
