With an eye on China, India has in recent years made a concerted effort to carve out a more serious role for itself in the Asia-Pacific. Under Modi, India has invested particular effort in strengthening ties with its East and Southeast Asian partners. Last week’s trilateral is a clear example of India’s growing role in the evolving strategic dynamics of the Asia-Pacific. Despite the preelection assumption that the BJP government would prioritize domestic reform, Prime Minister Modi has devoted an unexpected level of attention to foreign policy. Achieving an outright parliamentary majority, the 2014 elections delivered the BJP the largest electoral mandate of any Indian government since 1984. This parliamentary strength will gi

Just as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s return to power in late 2012, after six years of political instability, reflected Japan’s determination to reinvent itself as a more competitive and confident country, Narendra Modi’s election victory reflects Indians’ desire for a dynamic, assertive leader to help revitalize their country’s economy and security. Like Abe, Modi is expected to focus on reviving India’s economic fortunes while simultaneously bolstering its defenses and strengthening its strategic partnerships with likeminded states, thereby promoting regional stability and blocking the rise of a Sino-centric Asia. The charismatic Modi – a darling of business leaders at home and abroad – has promised to restore rapid economic growth, saying there should be  “no red tape, only red carpet”  for

India's Modi pledges defense procurement overhaul ( Copy Right @ Voice of Russia)

India's frontrunner for prime minister Narendra Modi has pledged to speed up corruption-hit defense procurement if he comes to power to ensure the country's military is better prepared for battle, AFP reports. As the nation's general election enters its final stretch, Modi said timely, cost-effective and corruption-free purchase of defense weapons and other equipment was critical for the military. "The last 10 years has seen our defense preparedness becoming weak on account of several procurement procedures mired by long delays leading to shortage of arms and equipment," Modi told the Times of India in an interview published Tuesday. "In the past, we have had a paradoxical situation where there was hardly any procurement happening in time and still serious questions of transparency have been raised." "The ideal situation is an efficient procurement system leading to timely and cost-effective procurement of quality defense equipmen

Modi's new India ( Copy Right @ ETV and The Pioneer)

HARI SHANKAR VYAS , senior Journalist and anchor of the popular programme  Central Hall  on ETV, speaks to the BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi about his vision and plans for a new India What is the significance of the slogan, ‘Congress-free India’? Why not, corruption-free India, unemployment-free India or poverty-free India? I have one satisfaction; the country knows me at least for one thing: Whenever Modi speaks, he speaks frankly without inhibitions, and from the heart, with conviction. When I speak about a ‘Congress-free India’, I mean freedom from the work-culture that the Congress has given to this nation during the last sixty years. I refer to freedom from the politics of vote bank, the politics of grabbing power through these means. The country hasn’t witnessed such a naked dance of corruption that it has seen during the last 10 years. Thus, a Congress-free India necessarily means an India free from bad governance, dynastic rule, misuse of Constitut
