China - US relations: main risks and contradictions ( Source- Strategic Culture Foundation/ Author- Augusto Soto)

Image source- Wikimedia Commons / Credits- United States Department of State Source- Strategic Culture Foundation Author- Augusto Soto Washington's strategic pressure over Beijing assertiveness in the South China Sea, including measures such as US military reconnaissance activities and political and military coordination with China’s neighbours, adds additional threats in Asia Pacific in the broader context of bilateral ties discussed last week in Washington during the annual U.S.-China strategic and economic dialogue. Conflict risks Washington has bolstered its Asia Pacific monitoring systems, including closer political and military cooperation with Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam and Australia. Beijing, meanwhile, declared by mid-June that it had concluded dredging enormous amounts of sand from around the Mischief Reef to build up land mass in South China Sea’s Spratly Islands during six months, according to the Pentagon. This in principle is the reason for

Islamic State Eying Afghanistan’s Natural Resources ( Source- The Diplomat / Author- Brian M. Parkins)

Image credits- BBC World / Farahnaz Hesarmal Source- The Diplomat Author- Brian M. Parkins According to a recent Pentagon report, the Islamic State’s (IS) activities in Afghanistan remain exploratory, with limited recruiting efforts. Although the capabilities of the Islamic State’s recently minted Khorasan Province may be limited, the group is clearly attempting to gain a toehold in Afghanistan. IS has dominated headlines in Afghan media for the past several weeks, with multiple reports of the group clashing with Taliban fighters in Nangarhar and a Taliban letter warning IS to stay out of Afghanistan. There is speculation that the Afghan government is exaggerating the IS threat to draw increased foreign aid, but the group’s presence is undeniable, and the worsening security situation could pave the way for IS to enhance its operations The Islamic State’s motives in Afghanistan remain ambiguous, and it is unclear if the group is capable of holding swaths of territory w

PLAN expansion into the Indian Ocean- What can India do?

PLAN Type- 39 Song Class Submarine ( Source- Wikimedia Commons / Author- SteKrrueBe) This news in Indian media was long coming. A Chinese submarine docked in Karachi port creeping close to the Indian territory and covering the entire length of the Indian coast from east to the west. It was a signal to all those concerned the PLAN has come of age and it is a power to be reckoned with and should not be under estimated. People's Liberation Army Navy is the official naval wing of the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army. For the  greater part of their history, PLAN was a brown water navy, meaning that  it was primed for coastal security and did not possess the capability for power projection outside their realm. But with the massive economic liberalisation, China finally had the resources to build up on their navy. China also attained the capability for mass production that ensured that they could field more ships in lesser time than any other navy in the world. China developed th

The reports said that the ship received replenishments for about a week inside the port. The submarine had a crew of about 65 sailors, according to the reports. The news was first reported by India Today. India Today also noted that the Yuan-class submarine is “equipped with torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and an air-independent propulsion that dramatically enhances its underwater endurance.” This is not the first time that Chinese submarine deployments have rattled India in recent months. A Song-class diesel-electric attack docked in Colombo, Sri Lanka last September, greatly irking New Delhi. Just a few weeks later, a second C

Why China Can't Change Course in the South China Sea ( Source- The Diplomat / Author- Ankit Panda)

Source- Wikimedia Commons / Author- Foreign and Common Wealth Office Source- The Diplomat Author- Ankit Panda China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, made a particularly interesting set of remarks recently on why China cannot recalibrate its approach to the disputed South China Sea. As Diplomat readers may recall, China has steadily raised the stakes in the South China Sea by constructing man-made islands and building a range of civilian and military structures on these islands. China’s approach to the South China Sea, according to Wang, cannot be rolled back — not due to any realist considerations on Beijing’s part, but because China “would not be able to face [its] forefathers and ancestors.” Wang made the remarks speaking specifically about China’s claims to the disputed Spratly Islands (known as the Nansha Islands in China): ”One thousand years ago China was a large sea-faring nation. So of course China was the first country to discover, use and administer the Nansha I

How Russia, China, and IS Have Made the US Popular Again ( Source- The Diplomat / Authors- Rob Spalding & Adam Lowther)

Image source- Wikimedia Commons / Author- White House, Pete Souza Source- The Diplomat Authors- Rob Spalding & Adam Lowther  In July 2014, Salon, the online magazine, loudly proclaimed that “the American century is over.” They were not the first to do so – numerous books and articles had made similar claims over the preceding years. Their arguments boiled down to this: America will continue as a world power, but not the dominant world power. In short, American power is declining while the power of states like China, Brazil, and India are rising. This growing chorus of “America is in decline” has spawned a vigorous debate on both sides of the political aisle, with little agreement. While pundits may continue to debate the issue, Americans are left to wonder, is American power truly in decline? As if sensing that the end is near, many Americans see a nation beset by economic, military, and political challenges and can’t help but think there might be some truth to th

Why China Continues To Lose Goodwill In India – Analysis ( Source- Eurasia Review / Author- Sridhar Krishnaswami / South Asia Monitor)

Image source- Flickr / MEA India official gallery, Govt of India Source- Eurasia Review Author- Sridhar Krishnaswami / South Asia Monitor If anyone was under the impression that India’s notification to the United Nations sanctions Committee to rein in Pakistan under Resolution 1267 over the release of dreaded terrorist and commander of the Lakshar-e-Taiba, Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, would have the nod of China, he/she was living in an illusory world. Even if India had provided “enough information” China would still have maintained that New Delhi had failed to do so and would have adopted every other procedural manoeuvre to prevent Pakistan from being raked over the coals. What really would have been news is if China had gone along with other permanent members of the United Nations Security Council to consider India’s referral. That being the case it is difficult to understand why there is so much heartburn in the media and elsewhere on the latest Chinese action. In fact,

South China Sea Boils: China Sends Oil Rig Near Vietnam Again ( Source- The National Interest / Author- Zachary Keck)

Chinese oil rig Haiyang Shiyou 981 ( Source- Wikimedia Commons / Author- VOA)  Source- The National Interest Author- Zachary Keck China has moved an oil rig that was at the heart of a dispute with Vietnam last year to waters near Vietnam again, according to multiple news report. Yesterday, Vietnamese newspapers began reporting, citing the Chinese Maritime Safety Administration (MSA), that China’s Haiyang Shiyou 981 (HD-981) oil rig was being moved to waters where China and Vietnam’s Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) overlap. According to the news reports, the platform is now located 17°03'75’' North latitude and 109°59’05’’ East longitude. In the statement, MSA warned that all ships must stay 2,000 meters away from the rig. The HD-981 will explore for oil and gas in the region between now and August 20, according to the MSA statement. Last year, the HD-981 was sent deep inside Vietnam’s EEZ, which plunged Chinese-Vietnamese relations to their lowest leve

India’s Armed Drone Fleet ( Source- The Diplomat / Author- Saurav Jha)

Rostom-1 UAV ( Source- Wikimedia Commons / Author- Kaushal Mehta) Source- The Diplomat Author- Saurav Jha With even Pakistan now sporting an armed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed with Chinese assistance, India has decided to accelerate the development of its own weaponized drone fleet. The process of weaponizing an indigenously developed UAV has commenced and the elements required to operate an armed drone fleet, such as a high accuracy satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) and dedicated military communication satellites, are being put in place anyway. Work is also underway on a stealthy unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV). Despite this, India still has to make some progress on the collision avoidance technology needed to give its drones the flexibility to use civilian airspace. It will also need to increase satellite bandwidth considerably to increase the tempo of armed UAV flights. In the next few years limited use of drone strikes near India’s border

Kamov Ka-52 attack helicopter ( Source- Wikimedia Commons / Author- Alex Beltyukov) Source- Russia & India Report Author- Alexander Korolkov Helicopters came into being after the major wars of the 20th century were fought. The helicopter had neither the altitude nor speed to work in either of the world wars fought in the last century. But the helicopter has come into its own, with a number of advantages over attack jet aircraft, as a means of battle support. Historic insight The Soviet Union built two attack helicopters in the 1980’s. Two Soviet design bureaus, Mil and Kamov, built them as a counter to the American AH-64. Test results till the end of the 80s showed the single-seater Ka-50, built on the coaxial scheme, winning over the traditional Mi-28 by Mil. The Russian Federation inherited these machines. However, at the turn of the 21st century, the Mi-28 with ‘N’ tag trumped its old rival, as a result of which the Defence Ministry decided to buy them both
