Tejas LCA- The Evolution

Image Credits-Wikipedia I am back to blogging after nearly eight months. Many things have happened in the time frame. Perhaps the most interesting is the evolution of the LCA Tejas, India's indigenous combat aircraft program. Perhaps of all the combat aircraft, perhaps Tejas is the closest to my heart as an Indian as it is an indigenous product.  Tejas was initiated as project LCA with the intention not only to find a replacement for the venerable Mig-21 but also as a project for the establishment of the entire eco-system for the development and manufacture of a combat aircraft. It was also envisaged as the stepping stone for the development of a whole new and advanced technologies for the manufacture of avionics and weapon systems. But like many of the countries like Sweden, India had to rely on OEM's for certain products that India could not master,  the most important being the engine. Even though Kaveri engine project was initiated, it was decoupled from the main

LCA Tejas- The rise of the Phoenix

HAL LCA Tejas ( Image credits- Wikimedia Commons / Defence19) On 1.07.2016, history was made when Tejas, India's 4'th generation combat aircraft joined the Indian Air Force after a protracted delay as part of the Squadron No-45 Flying Daggers . The project which was 32 years in making, but the years of investment has finally borne fruit. Made of composites, Tejas is the lightest combat aircraft in the world. Designed as a replacement for the legendary MIG-21 in the Indian Air Force Fleet, Tejas is in many ways more than a project for the Indian aviation industry. LCA project paves way for the establishment of the entire ecosystem of an aircraft design and manufacture, an art that was long lost when the designers of HAL HF-24 Marut left or retired after the project. Hence the LCA team had to begin from scratch. Coupled with crippling sanctions post India's nuclear tests which delayed the project.  LCA as a project can be considered as a success as there has not bee

Made-In-India Jet Fighter: Big Step In Weapons Self-Reliance ( Source- Eurasia Review / Author- Admiral Arun Prakash, South Asian Monitor)

IAF LCA Tejas ( Image credits- Wikimedia Commons / Rinju9) Source- Eurasia Review Author- Admiral Arun Prakash, South Asian Monitor On July 1, 2016, No.45 Squadron IAF became the proud recipient of India’s first indigenous 4th generation+ fighter; the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) dubbed Tejas. This marks, not just an historic landmark for our aerospace industry, but a significant step forward in India’s quest for self-reliance in weapon systems and fits neatly into PM Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign. Not more than a handful of countries can claim the competence to bring a project of such complexity to fruition. It would therefore be appropriate to acknowledge the achievement of our aircraft designers, scientists, production engineers, and the flight-test team for having delivered a state-of-the art combat aircraft to the IAF – although belatedly. It will be a few years before Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) can deliver the squadron’s full outfit of aircraft, but t

JF-17 vs HAL Tejas: New Competitors on the Military Block ( Source- The Diplomat / Author- Kabir Taneja)

HAL Tejas ( Image credits- Wikimedia Commons / Rinju9) Source- The Diplomat Author- Kabir Taneja The Bahrain International Air Show slated to be held between January 21-23 at the Sakhir Airbase in Bahrain is supposed to be the first international symposium where India will showcase its indigenously built, but much delayed, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Tejas light combat aircraft. This move, reportedly taken at a “political level,” could place the Tejas as an export option in the future and will expose it to much wider scrutiny over its performance and offerings in the international market. However, even though this may become an exciting time for the Tejas as a potential option for foreign militaries for their arsenal, it has an interesting competitor from its own neighborhood. The JF-17 Thunder fighter jet, jointly developed by China’s Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) and its Pakistani partner, Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), is also now in t

The display and flight demonstration of the Tejas fighter jet can be interpreted as a direct response to Pakistan’s attempt to sell its jointly-developed Pakistan Aeronautical Complex/Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (PAC/CAC) JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft on the international arms market. However, whereas Pakistan has already inducted the JF-17 into the Pakistan Air Force, only one fi

Stealing their Thunder: India to offer Tejas fighter to Sri Lanka ( Source- Want China Times)

HAL Tejas ( Image credits- Wikimedia Commons / Subharnab) Source- Want China Times India plans to export its LCA Tejas multirole fighter to Sri Lanka to compete with the JF-17 Thunder or FC-1 Xiaolong multirole fighter developed jointly by China and Pakistan, according to a senior officials from Colombo, the Sunday Observer, an English-language weekly based in Colombo, reported on Oct. 25. Air Marshal Gagan Bulathsinghala, commander of Sri Lanka Air Force, will visit Pakistan next month to learn more about the Thunder, as Sri Lanka wants new supersonic fighter jets to strengthen its air defense. However, air force officials said Bulathsinghala's visit to Pakistan is only a routine official visit. The nation has not made a final decision about purchasing the fighter from Pakistan. Pakistan and Myanmar are the only two operators of the JF-17, developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and China's Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group. Since China does not

LCA Tejas ( Image credits- Wikimedia Commons / Attributes- Vishak ) Original source- The Defence News Tejas, India's first indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), which is all set to replace the MiG-21 series, is a result of several years of design and development work from the DRDO. What's special about India's own LCA? How does it rate on the global scale? We take a look at some lesser-known salient facts about the Tejas that set it apart from those in its league.  'Best in its class' :: According to Ravi Kumar Gupta, the Directorate of Public Interface at DRDO, 'Tejas is the best in its class in the world. It is a four plus generation aircraft.' Gupta said that it is 'not appropriate' to make a direct comparison of the Tejas with its global counterparts. 'It is a beautiful machine, designed for our own people,' he reiterated. The technology used to manufacture the aircraft is such, that it 'will not go obsolete&#
