This move, reportedly taken at a “political level,” could place the Tejas as an export option in the future and will expose it to much wider scrutiny over its performance and offerings in the international market. However, even though this may become an exciting time for the Tejas as a potential option for foreign militaries for their arsenal, it has an interesting competitor from its own neighborhood. The JF-17 Thunder fighter jet, jointly developed by China’s Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) and its Pakistani partner, Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), is also now in t

As Robert Farley noted earlier, several states in Asia are getting in the holiday spirit with the presentation of so-called “fifth generation” combat aircraft. Furthermore, as I’ve covered the last couple of weeks, fourth generation birds are still in high demand throughout the region. As Franz-Stefan Gady has reported for The Diplomat, the Sino-Pakistani JF-17 Thunder (known in China as the FC-1 Xiaolong) is also trying to compete in this crowded field. Developed as a joint venture between China’s Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group (CAC) and

Pakistan and China had previously made similar statements at the Paris airshow earlier in the year. China has geared the lightweight fighter—which is also known as the FC-1 Xiaolong—to aim for the low-end of the international fighter market. “After several years’ co-development and marketing, China and Pakistan have signed a contract with third party customer for the purchase of JF-17 Thunder,” reads a statement released by AVIC. “As China and Pakistan improve their ability and skills in co-developing JF-17 Thunder, the aircraft is becoming a ‘Blue Ocean product’ with much market potentials as an ideal repl

HAL Tejas ( Image credits- Wikimedia Commons / Subharnab) Source- Want China Times India plans to export its LCA Tejas multirole fighter to Sri Lanka to compete with the JF-17 Thunder or FC-1 Xiaolong multirole fighter developed jointly by China and Pakistan, according to a senior officials from Colombo, the Sunday Observer, an English-language weekly based in Colombo, reported on Oct. 25. Air Marshal Gagan Bulathsinghala, commander of Sri Lanka Air Force, will visit Pakistan next month to learn more about the Thunder, as Sri Lanka wants new supersonic fighter jets to strengthen its air defense. However, air force officials said Bulathsinghala's visit to Pakistan is only a routine official visit. The nation has not made a final decision about purchasing the fighter from Pakistan. Pakistan and Myanmar are the only two operators of the JF-17, developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and China's Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group. Since China does not
