The AAD is part of the first phase of India’s Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) initiative, along with the Prithvi Air Defense (PAD) missile. The Prithvi provides exoatmosphermic defense while the AAD is optimized for endoatmospheric performance. According to Indian defense officials who spoke to the Press Trust of India, “The test was conducted to validate various parameters of the interceptor in flight mode.” Specifically, “The ‘kill’ effect of the interceptor was being ascertained by analysing data from multiple tracking sources,” according to a DRDO scientist. The test was conducted at a testing site on Abdul Kalam Island, which was formerly known as Wheeler Island. The AAD has been unde

The trial was apparently successful; an Agni-IV was launched from a land-based mobile missile launcher on the Indian Army’s test site on Wheeler Island, cruised at an altitude of 600 km before splashing down in the Bay of Bengal after a 3,000 km flight. All radar stations, telemetry, and electro-optical systems along the east coast monitored the performance of the missile during the entire operation and, according to a Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) official, “Flight was successful and it met all the mission parameters.” According to DRDO, the Agni-IV missile is equipped with 5th generation onboard computer and distributed architecture. It has the latest features to correct and guide itself for in-flight disturbances.

"The missile was test-fired from a mobile launcher positioned at launch pad 3 of the Integrated Test Range at about 10.03 hours," said an official soon after the flight took off from the launch ground. "Flight details will be available after data retrieved from radars and telemetry points, monitoring the trajectories, are analysed," the official said. It is the second test of the sub-sonic long range cruise missile 'Nirbhay' from the ITR. The maiden flight, conducted on March 12, 2013 could not achieve all the desired parameters as "the flight had to be terminated mid-way when deviations were observed from its intended course," sources sa
